The main question is how the inclusion of one single item in your diet can be expected to have such drastic impact on one’s weight. Gradually replacing important carbohydrates and fats in your food with this fruit may not be the healthiest option. A certain amount of fat and carbohydrates is required to digest food, and subtracting these could have serious consequences. This diet also advocates the intake of only a maximum of eight-hundred calories, which goes against what all current dieticians prescribe. In fact, they say that healthy active individuals require a minimum of a thousand calories; anything less than that can lead to malnutrition.

Despite all the criticism, there was a time when this diet was believed to work. There might definitely be some benefits to ingesting grapefruit, even if one is not following the strictest grapefruit diet. This is where researchers have left the argument, which is probably better, considering the number of other extreme diets that have developed since then.
