Everyone likes to talk about the fact that “God is good” and “God is love” without ever realizing the implications this brings for humanity. This results from a lack of biblical knowledge about the true nature of humans, being dead in sin and actually evil. Many people, including human beings who call themselves Christians, like to think of man as naturally good with a small bit of evil showing through every now and then. Nevertheless, the Scripture paints a much different picture. Human beings are genetically sinful and evil, and it is because of this that “God being good” is a fearsome reality.
Genesis 6:5 claims that “The LORD saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.” Since we are dead in sin it follows that there in fact is no good in man whatsoever. In fact God says that we are only evil continually. It is because of this that bad men should fear God, for Proverbs 11:21 claims “Be sure of this: The wicked will not go unpunished, but those who are righteous will go free.” It is for this reason that we need the righteousness of Jesus since we have no goodness of ourselves.
Human beings often say that “God is Love” and for this reason he cannot hate. In reality, God must hate on account of God is love. For if you love that which is good, you have to hate that which is evil. Psalm 5:5 says “The arrogant cannot stand in your presence; you hate all who do wrong.” This is talking of God hating those who do wrong. We can also understand by the reality that God will not let the guilty go unpunished that he truly does abhor evil and sin. Many say that “God hates the sin but not the sinner.” Be that as it may if we look again at Psalm 5:5 it without any doubt says he hates people who do wrongly.
It is on account of God hates evil and those who do evil that we need Jesus. If left to ourselves, we cannot please God nor do that which is good in his mind. We cannot be worthy of our salvation by doing good things, for Isaiah 64:6 states “All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.” We have no admirable righteousness of ourselves, and for that reason we require the righteousness of Christ in our place.
It is, for that reason, a terrible thing to go around telling people that God loves them even though they go on sinning willfully. Human beings who believe that God loves them no matter what will not have any longing to approach the cross of Christ. Human beings must be told they have fallen short of the glory of God, and should fear God for the reason that he will not let the wicked go unpunished. Only then will people actually comprehend their own helplessness and need for Christ Jesus.
