The air filter is one of the dirtiest parts of the house. Its where all the dust, dirt, bacteria and fungus from the air gets trapped. Over time the deposits in the air filter can become so thick that the air flow through it is blocked which will not only lower the efficiency of the heating or cooling system, but the reduces air flow to the heating /cooling unit can damage it or cause it to overheat which is a serious fire hazard.

Its strange how often we forget the fact that the appliances that we use for cleaning themselves need to be cleaned regularly. Think of all the dirt that comes off all the clothes that are washed in the machine over a period of a few months.

When I look at the stereotype of the 1950s housewife, I think that she (a) is damn lucky not having to juggle running a house AND look after small children AND hold down a job, (b) has impossibly high standards of cleanliness. It seems absolutely ironic that the women’s movement allowed women to do more things than housework, but modern living still seems to demand that our houses are just as spotless and germ-free than any 1950s home.

Who remembers watching Jim Henson’s Muppets and listening to Kermit the Frog plaintively warbling that “It’s not easy being green”? Well, Kermit, living a greener lifestyle is easier than you might think. You don’t have to live off the grid, eat nothing but organically-grown lentils harvested when the moon is in Aquarius or use a composting toilet to make a difference to the planet.

To many minds, the bathroom is the place where the greatest amount of bacteria lurk, whether or not your toilet is located in the bathroom itself or elsewhere. The bathroom often looks the tackiest, what with soap and toothpaste smears everywhere, grey soap scum on the taps and rings around the bath.

Most of us like to be independent and think that we are competent enough to give things a go and do it ourselves. Even if we hire a domestic cleaner to do the regular round-the-house tidying, we like to think that we would be able to handle the dusting, vacuuming and polishing ourselves.
