Psychological Impotence- Diagnosis, Causes and Treatment

The sexual disorder called erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence is presently affecting men of all ages. It is a sexual disorder in which a man is not able to achieve or maintain an erection for a long duration of time. ED may not be always the result of underlying disease or disorder, most of the times several psychological causes are responsible for causing impotence. The impotence produced as a result of psychological causes is termed Psychological Impotence.

Diagnosis

Erectile dysfunction can be treated depending on the underlying cause. The doctors ask for your entire medical history. The doctor rules out the possibility of any physical health ailment by conducting physical examination and certain blood tests. If the doctor feels that the results of the blood test are normal, he/she may ask you certain questions regarding your sexual desire, your ability to attain and maintain an erection, ability to reach orgasm and your overall sexual satisfaction

Causes

The most psychological causes of developing erectile dysfunction include:

• Stress

• Anxiety

• Depression

• Frustration

All these psychological causes are interlinked. Several men today have long working hours, they have deadlines to meet, and there is work pressure. Some also are forced to do a job they are not interested in. All these leaves a man frustrated and dejected. As is it known that erection starts in the brain, a mentally unstable man is not able to get sexually aroused and the result is impotence.

So any kind of events such as loss of loved one or family member, relationship conflicts with a partner, that lead to stress or depression can cause erectile dysfunction.

In short, the above mentioned psychological factors interfere with the ability of the brain to send the signals to the penile region. Thus, a man is not able to achieve or maintain an erection necessary for satisfactory sexual intercourse.

Treatment options

Though the psychological causes of impotence are more intricate than the medical causes, they are treatable. Everybody should be aware that treating psychological impotence cannot be as easy as taking Sildenafil citrate (Viagra).

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is most commonly recommended for psychological impotence. This treatment helps the person suffering from ED to identify and change unhealthy patterns of thought and action which may be responsible for causing erectile dysfunction.

One can also try simple relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation. Just ten to fifteen minutes of yoga or meditation a day can drastically improve your life. These techniques help to reduce stress and anxiety.

Impotence caused as a result of psychological factors is not something a man should suffer alone. It can lower your self-esteem. Open up and communicate with someone to get out of it.
