Three years ago, I had the opportunity to plan my family’s annual hunting trip which included choosing and buying all the hunting supplies we would need for our three days out.
Because my dad had always taken care of planning these trips, I greatly underestimated the many things we would need while in the wilderness and let’s just say we were missing a quite a few necessary items those three days.
I learned the hard way that first trip but since then have added many items to my hunting gear and have planned many successful trips with all the right supplies. When asked by friends to share my supply list and to help organize their own trips, one of the first pieces of advice I give them is to prepare the right hunting supplies, sufficient for the entire trip.
Not only does the success of your trip depend on what you have with you, but your safety also plays an important part in what you choose to take. Because your hunting supplies are such an important part of your trip, you will want to keep in mind that once in the wilderness, you will not be able to buy extra food or forgotten equipment.
Because of this, I always make sure that each individual of the hunting party has their own personal hunting gear before I move on to planning for the whole group. Each person in your party should have the appropriate hunting apparel and an odor eliminator to eliminate human scent in the wilderness.
It is also important for each individual to choose a sleeping bag appropriate for their body size and one that is comfortable. I have found it helpful to hand out a list of necessary items that each individual is responsible for bringing. By doing this, you will then easily be able to turn your attention to planning supplies for the group as a whole.
I have also learned that a big part of a successful trip is planning a sufficient amount of food, communal tools, cookware and first aid supplies for everyone in the group. Since a successful hunt usually lasts more than a day, you will want to make sure you have the appropriate camping gear for the time you will be away.
Making plans for the sleeping arrangements is also important. I like to have as many tents as I need in order for everyone to sleep comfortably. Unless you plan to camp in a very dry and safe area you will want to invest in a good tent or a few tents if your party is big.
Another indispensable item you must have is a utility knife! It was very useful for everything from cutting wood for a fire to skinning animals to eat and is one of the hunting supplies you do not want to forget!
You can easily find all of this hunting equipment and more in outdoor recreational stores. If you are on a budget though, you might find it beneficial to buy your hunting supplies wholesale.
Many of the products that are offered at wholesale prices are very good and are only sold at cheaper prices because they are not name brand or are out of season. Buying wholesale always saves me a lot of money and allows me to buy extra gear. The thing to remember though when buying wholesale is to research any questionable items and only buy quality.
It is better to pay a little more for items like tree stands and GPS equipment than to have such an important item break while you are out on the hunt. Of all the many things involved in planning a successful hunting trip, the most important thing to remember is to prepare adequately before hand and take enough necessary equipment and hunting supplies.
